‘There Is No Darkness In The Garden Of Light’

For Art of London
New Public illuminated the West End with an installation of eight new neon artworks titled "There Is No Darkness In the Garden Of Light" by mixed-media artist Chila Kumari Singh Burman MBE.
Commissioned by the award-winning cultural initiative Art of London for its bi-annual culture programme Art After Dark, which unites independent galleries with major institutions, the site-specific installation was curated and delivered by New Public,
Burman’s installation responds to the William Shakespeare water fountain in Leicester Square whose inscription reads "there is no darkness but ignorance." The installation is a celebration of light, illumination and inclusivity that reflects Burman's Punjabi-Liverpudlian heritage and the diverse communities of London.
Burman’s creations include radiant representations of Indian deities like Laxmi and Ganesh, a whimsical underwater scene with fish and seashells referencing the details found in London’s water fountains, as well as icons of South Asian femininity and a magical, Barbie-inspired figure.
Debuting ahead of Diwali, the installation included a trail of glowing artworks around Leicester Square including neons at London Trocadero, The Hippodrome Casino, Westminster Reference Library and The Londoner hotel, and a very special screening of Burman’s film “Dada and The Punjabi Princess” on the Piccadilly Lights.
