‘Piccadilly Un:Plugged’

For Art of London

Art of London commissions Nelly Ben Hayoun-Stépanian, multidisciplinary artist, filmmaker, award-winning “willy wonka of design and science” and founder of the International Space Orchestra. Curated and delivered by New Public, the immersive creative journey and ecofeminist experience will take place across London’s West End for Art After Dark, 6th-8th March 2025.

Piccadilly Un:Plugged is inspired by the vibrant culture of the district, its nightlife and nightlife workers, while reflecting on astronomy, space environmentalism and our connection with outer space. Over three days and nights, Nelly invites audiences to unplug from their earthly day-to-day surroundings and venture from the West end into the cosmos - to discover new ways of experiencing the night while contemplating a universe of possibility and our connection with extraterrestrial territories.

Around Piccadilly Circus, iridescent asteroids broadcast a hypnotic soundscape featuring tracks from Massive Attack, The Avalanches, Moses Boyd, Pussy Riot, and Mirrored Fatality, which have been sent into space and bounced off the Moon. Transmitted 768,800 km via Earth-Moon-Earth technology and received by Jodrell Bank’s Lovell Telescope in Manchester, the audio signal penetrates the moon’s crust by 3 meters before returning to Earth with a unique, otherworldly sound.

In Leicester Square, five-metre neon inflatable cats reference the quantum mechanical thought experiment, Schrödinger’s Cats, that states a Cat can be simultaneously both dead and alive.

Cutting-edge Unistellar telescopes at locations including the Royal Academy, National Portrait Gallery and St James’s Market offer breathtaking views of nebulae, star clusters, and Jupiter during the March Galaxy Season. Guided by SETI Institute and astronomers from Royal Astronomical Society.

A Cabinet of Curiosities in St James’s Market Pavilion showcases extraterrestrial-inspired ceramics created through workshops with local youth groups, Central St Martin’s and Clayground Collective.

And Nelly’s 25 minute film From The Full to The Void on the iconic Piccadilly Lights!
